Carl Elliott, M.D. Ph.D., is Professor in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Minnesota, where he also has joint appointments in the Department of Philosophy and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. A native South Carolinian, Elliott trained in medicine before earning his PhD in philosophy at Glasgow University in Scotland. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago, the University of Otago in New Zealand, and the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine at the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa. Prior to moving to Minnesota he taught at McGill University in Montreal. In 2003-04 he was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where he led a faculty seminar on bioethics. He is the author or editor of seven books, including Better than Well: American Medicine Meets the American Dream and White Coat, Black Hat: Adventures on the Dark Side of Medicine. His articles have appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Mother Jones and The New England Journal of Medicine.  He was awarded a 2011 Erikson Prize for Excellent in Mental Health Media.  In 2011-2012, he is a Network Fellow at the Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University.                                           >follow his continuous efforts<

At the Nordic Cochrane Centre, we have researched antidepressants for several years and I have long wondered why leading professors of psychiatry base their practice on a number of erroneous myths. These myths are harmful to patients. Many psychiatrists are well aware that the myths do not hold and have told me so, but they don’t dare deviate from the official positions because of career concerns.

Being a specialist in internal medicine, I don’t risk ruining my career by incurring the professors’ wrath and I shall try here to come to the rescue of the many conscientious but oppressed psychiatrists and patients by listing the worst myths and explain why they are harmful.

'Anatomy Of An Epidemic': Could Psychiatric Drugs Be Fueling A Mental Illness Epidemic?

A few years ago, while writing an article about the merits of psychiatric medications, I looked at whether the number of adults receiving a federal disability payment due to mental illness had significantly changed since 1987, which was the year that Prozac was introduced. Our society's use of psychiatric medications, of course, has soared since that time, and here's what I discovered: The number of adults, ages 18 to 65, on the federal disability rolls due to mental illness jumped from 1.25 million in 1987 to four million in 2007. Roughly one in every 45 working-age adults is now on government disability due to mental illness.

This epidemic has now struck our nation's children, too. The number of children who receive a federal payment because of a severe mental illness rose from 16,200 in 1987 to 561,569 in 2007, a 35-fold increase.   >Complete interview<
